Richard Glover: I won't cross electronic picket line
Friday, 29 August 2008

Stalwart Alliance member and SMH columnist, Richard Glover, yesterday invited Herald editor, Alan Oakley on to his drivetime radio show on Sydney’s 2BL 702.

Oakley was silly enough to agree. He got a roasting.

The SMH editor, clearly something of a neophyte at the hard interview, allowed himself to be drawn into a circular argument over the mean-spirited sacking of Mike Carlton for refusing to cross “the electronic picket line”.

Under pressure Oakley became a little flustered, but then rallied and decided to poke a little fun at Glover.

“We’ve got a very nice column by you in tomorrow’s paper,” he said with an audible smirk.

“Yes,” replied Glover. “But it was filed to deadline last Tuesday, before any of the industrial action. And let me say that if there is still industrial action next Tuesday I won’t be filing the column.

“If I don't file the column and if you don't get all the other columnists to file their columns, will we be terminated as well?”

To his credit, Glover told listeners how embarrassed he was his column was appearing in a strike-breaking paper. Good on you Richard.
