IFJ Letter of Support
Tuesday, 02 September 2008

On behalf of the International Federation of Journalists, its Executive Committee and our members all around the world, I am proud to declare our solidarity and support with our colleagues at Fairfax in their fight for jobs and journalists' rights.  The Fairfax management, like many others faced with the challenges of change in our industry, are adopting a brutal and shortsighted strategy that will damage the fabric of journalism.  Cutting jobs is not the way to build strong and independent media.  Journalists all over the world are fighting for a better way that will.  We wish you well in your struggle and remember that the IFJ and its 600,000 members in 122 countries is with you every step of the way.

Aidan White
General Secretary
International Federation of Journalists

The Thin Black Line
Sunday, 31 August 2008

Saturday 30th August is the ninth anniversary of the independence ballot in East Timor. Fairfax journalists were at the forefront of covering the events of those turbulent, dangerous and unforgettable times. At the height of the crisis, with the Indonesian military and its militia thugs going on a rampage against the civilians of East Timor, The Age’s Jakarta correspondent, Lindsay Murdoch, The Sydney Morning Herald’s Hamish McDonald and Louise Williams, and Indonesian-based journalist Zannuba Wahid provided coverage of immeasurable value to the Australian public and the international community.

NZ EPMU: Letter of Support
Sunday, 31 August 2008

I'm lead delegate at the Taranaki Daily News in Fairfax's New Zealand stable. I learned of the job cuts on the midday news and had them confirmed by reading an AAP story on Fairfax's own NZ Stuff website. This was quickly followed up by an email to staff from our general manager and the one from Kirk and McCarthy - but by then the damage was done.

ACTU: Fairfax job cuts go too far
Friday, 29 August 2008

This week’s announcement of plans to cut 550 jobs at Fairfax Media is another worrying case of a short-sighted push for profits by bonus-driven executives at the expense of people’s livelihoods and the company’s long-term viability, says the ACTU.

British Journalists: Be Strong. Be Proud. Be Victorious
Friday, 29 August 2008

On behalf of 39,000 members of the National Union of Journalists in the UK and Ireland we send you solidarity and support for your fight to defend the editorial integrity and quality of your papers.

It is not possible to cut 550 jobs and not undermine the quality of the papers produced. It is a false economy.

Australian staffers express their support
Friday, 29 August 2008

The Alliance chapter at The Australian offices in Sydney deeply regrets the management action at Fairfax Media that has left so many journalists in distress.

Media Alliance members at The Australian deplore the growing willingness among corporate leaders to focus on staff sackings whenever they choose to carry out company restructures or cost-saving programs.

We're right behind you say Murdoch journos
Friday, 29 August 2008

The Alliance house committee at the Herald and Weekly Times endorses and supports the actions of journalists at Fairfax who are fighting to retain adequate staffing and conditions at their mastheads.
